Serbs are Orthodox and Croats are catholics. The biggest issue between these two comes from WW II, where they took opposed sides: Serbs were with Brits and Americans, and Croats supported Germany and Italy. During that war, Croats made many crimes, they even had their own concentration camp, which was the only one I guess in Europe that was not held by Germans. In that camp they killed a thousands of Serbs, Jews, Gypsies, etc. But most of the victims were Serbs. Same as Turks when it comes to Armenian genocide, Croats were always denying it, and claiming that there was less victims, until Jews and Simon Wiesenthal center took huge campaign. The result is that today you even have Day of victims of Jasenovac, officially recognized in New York city:

There is a really good book about the war in Bosnia called Love Thy Neighbor,A Story of War by Peter Maass. You could also just google his name. This is a great book on the "ethnic cleansing" and genocide that happens right before us and how not much gets done to help due to a breakdown in communications and deceptive communications.
