It has a long history. It looks like the human race is moving away from it. Racism is a loser on 2 counts, 1) you lose whatever contribution the oppressed might make and 2) you waste energy oppressing them. Why hold back a young black student who might one day cure cancer? Why hold back anybody? Its wrong, its a waste of resources and energy. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Its racist to give a group or individual special rights to protect them or enable them in ways that others dont get entitled to. If everyone was treated fairly, i.e. a job, schooling, civil rights and such then racism would not be an issue. If we give certain people "help" by giving extra points on entrance exams or equal opportunity for jobs based on their race then we are then contributing to things that may cause resentment/racism. Equal opportunity should be that if 2 people walk into a job offer and both have the same qualifications then consideration should be given to the one whose work history or whatever is the better of the two. Not give the job to one just because he is of a minority race unless he is the better candidate for the job. If you apply for a job that requires skills then maybe its not to much to ask that you actually have the skills, not get the job because their arent enough minorities in the workplace already. Dont get me wrong - I believe in equal opportunity - everyone should have an equal chance to get up and go to work hard for a good days pay. Those who slack off/dont work hard dont deserve unequal opportunities.

Indulging in racism is an enormous waste of time. Why spend time hating someone (or group of people) that you don't even know or understand based on skin color? Really, that's a very unintelligent thing to do. Get to know someone and then decide whether or not you like them based on their personality. We are all unique, regardless of race or ethnic background. If more people understood that, the world would be a much better place. Aren't you tired of all of the hate in this world? I know I am. Thanks for your question.
Peace,
Journey

I think people are too quick to judge others. EVERYONE has a different personality and should be judged based upon how they demonstrate that personality others, not the color of their skin. Although racism exists, it's one of the serious detriments of this planet.

I wasn't going to answer this question until I saw the answer upstairs.
Racism IS a "Big deal" and is NOT something to "get over". You cannot, in 2007 go around denying a group of people HUMAN RIGHTS because of the color of their skin!
And no I am not talking about using politically incoorect language, checking to see if your wallet or purse is there, or tasteless jokes.
I am talking about assault, hate crimes, torture, Murder, rape.
And yes, this happens. TODAY. IN 2007.

I'm just plain sick and tired of it! I'm tired of reading about it, hearing about it and answering about it, so this is my last comment about racism....
I don't agree with it, but it will always be around as long as people are different.

People use it as a crutch now. I work in a job where it's thrown out every day because someone didn't receive exactly what they asked for. The customers always right..not when they accuse someone of being racist because they failed their test... Sorry.. I think it's over used and it still happens but it's become like the boy who cried wolf.

I think it's somewhat natural to not really like people unlike yourself, or to at least judge them sometimes. But to be extreme with it, or to never give that person a chance to show themself for what they are, it is wrong.
I also think that people are waaay too quick to call people a racist. Not everyone who questions people's behaviors or points out proven statistics (unfavorable ones) is a racist. People tend to create a problem where there isn't one.
