The Taliban didn't plan the attack knowing he was there. He wasn't even supposed to be there today. He had to stay another day because he couldn't meet with the President yesterday because of bad weather. He was moved from the base for a short time after the bombing, and he returned when the situation was secure, so he didn't exaxtly "cut and run". The Taliban is just saying that they planned to kill him to fuel their war of propaganda.

Because he did not move there. He visited for a meeting with our allies and left after the meeting as scheduled.

With the many lunatics on the left, Cheney and GWB are in much more danger of being killed than our frontline troops. And that is just from americans.

News-

The vice president had spent the night at the sprawling Bagram Air Base, and it was about 10 a.m. when the explosion sent up a plume of smoke visible by reporters accompanying. U.S. military officials declared a "red alert."

Cheney told reporters. "As the situation settled down and they had a better sense of what was going on, I went back to my room."

Maj. William Mitchell said it did not appear the explosion was intended as a threat to Cheney. "He wasn't near the site of the explosion," Mitchell said. "He was safely within the base at the time of the explosion."

Cheney, who had been stranded at the base overnight by a snowstorm, met with President Hamid Karzai in the capital before heading back to the United States via the Gulf state of Oman.

the bomber did not get closer than roughly a mile to the vice president

Cheney said: "I think they clearly try to find ways to question the authority of the central government. Striking at Bagram with a suicide bomber, I suppose, is one way to do that. But it shouldn't affect our behavior at all."

President Bush was not awakened to be told about the attack, but received an update early Tuesday morning.

"We knew that Dick Cheney would be staying inside the base," Ahmadi told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location. "The attacker was trying to reach Cheney."

But it appeared unlikely the bomber would have been able to reach the vice president, who was in a "very safe and secure place" roughly a mile from the blast site, said U.S. spokesman Lt. Col. David Accetta.

The bomber, Accetta said, never tried to get by any U.S.-manned security checkpoints and instead walked into a group of Afghans outside the base and detonated himself.

"To characterize this as a direct attempt on the life of the vice president is absurd," Accetta said.

He was preparing to leave for the meeting with Karzai when the suicide bomber struck about 10 a.m. (12:30 a.m. ET)

About two hours after the blast, Cheney left on a military flight for Kabul to meet with President Hamid Karzai and other officials, then left Afghanistan.

Sounds like a cut + run.. NOT!!!

What did you expect him to do. Do you really think a man his age & in his health should stay in a combat zone? That is not his job.

Where was your elected official when V.P. Cheney was risking his life for democracy? Probably out protesting the war and smoking dope I'm guessing.

It's nothing to laugh at. For an attack to take place in a US base just shows how out of control the situation is in Iraq.

Don't worry he'll make sure thousands of young men and women serving in our armed forces are sent to their doom to protect his honor.

You guessed wrong. Why would our #2 guy expose himself to possible enemy action, to give them more publicity? But then, maybe you're one of them and not one of us.
