Yes. If you look at the history of the NHL, the Habs are #1. If you're looking at the current season, Nashville is. If you're thinking about the most recent Cup winner, that's the Canes.

The Devils are a good team in technicals though not in show, don't get me wrong. However, they are not #1. They win a lot. However, They are not the best and are not likely to be this year.

Hey! One thing I hate is how people insult the Devils for their "boring" play. If you hate Bettman so much, then why are you agreeing with him? I'm sure if you guys were commisioner, you'd make the same moves he does to increase the offense. The fact is you guys should know that hockey is exciting without the goals as well. Great defense and continuous plays with limited stoppage time is the best kind of hockey. Let the score be 2-1 or 1-0! There's probably 20 ridiculous godlike saves that goalies from BOTH sides of the ice made. The Devils are a great defensive-minded hockey team and even with the new rules, they have the lowest Goals Against Average as a team. How can a team be boring with Cam Janssen picking a fight almost every game? No wait! How about Marty's flexible stops and smart puck-handling? C'mon! Want me to keep going? Okay, the defense that doesn't allow an all-star to make any fancy moves around the Devils players? And if any mistakes are made, there's Marty to make a great save. What is great about the Devils is they play as a team. Each player would gladly give up 20 points individually to gain 20 points in the Standings. They think of the team, then themselves. Is that not the make-up of a Stanley Cup contending powerhouse? YES!!!
Now with that out of the way, no, the Devils are not #1 this year. In my opinion, they are ranked #2, disconcerning the points standings. At this point in the season, they are the second most talented team in the NHL and they have a great chance of going far in the playoffs. Nashville would be my pick for #1 team now. However, the Devils are the hottest team in the NHL since January and I think they can keep their little hot streak going. Wow, I really needed to let that out.

First of all what does popularity have to do with what makes a good hockey team? Look I would rather have small fan base then be a bunch of losers stuck in last place like the Flyers reminiscing about the glory days back in the Ford-Carter administration.

Ranger fans you get the spotlight because you've heritage but you'll be crying too the WFAN when the Garden goes dark in April.
I would rather play second fiddle then wait another 50 years.

Hey Penguin fans you'll get to see just how overrated Brodeur is when he shuts you down. Then you'll wish you had a real goalie when you get bounced out of the playoffs.

If it's pretty skating you want then go see the ladies figure skate. Otherwise I'll be watching the Devils go all the way into June led by their underatted not overpriced players- Gionta, Parise, Langenbrunner, Gomez, Elias, Rafalski, Mad Dog Madden, and yes that overrated hall of famer three time and counting Stanly Cup winning Brodeur.

PS: Red Wing fans will you ever get over 1995? Hope Hasek doesn't turn into a head case.

The NJ Devils are number one. Yesterday, today and tomorrow. Lou is the one of the best, if not the best GM in all of hockey. It is a shame we have an asshole of a commish. Bettman is drivingthe game underground to new level and has a personal vandetta against the Devils.
We win three Stanley Cups in 9 years, master an old school style of defensive hockey and he decides the league needs to be changed.
Yet, Broduer is leading in GAA, and Shutouts, with the tem 4th best in the league.
But back to your astute observation. Through depth, teamwork and NO STAR POWER, we win and lose as a TEAM. One of the few true TEAMS out there. Over the years we have lost some size and toughness, but have made up for it in speed and skill, still focused on defense. Success begins at the crease and extends from there.
Vegas odds have had NJ as the 4th best favorite since preseason to win the cup. We came together a little late last year, and unfortunately wrere too excited abput beating the lowly strangers we forgot tere were 12 more games to win.
Nonetheless - The New Jersey Devils are one of the elite teams in hockey; and in a sport that gets near zero coverage and respect, the Devils get even less.
We play for the logo on the front, not the name on the back.
I'll see you in the playoffs bro!!

Yes, you are correct in that you are in fact wrong. The Sabres are the best. I mean 8 starters out of the line up and they still continue to win. They are scarey good. NJ is really good, and I think have a better goalie, but the Sabres are the ultimate team right now. It could come down to those two in the semis, which would be a great series.

I think a lot of the people that are trashing the DEVILS are from Detroit and have never gotten over the sweep of the STF. Get real. The Devils are the hottest team in the NHL now. They have not lost back to back games since early December. Marty is one of the best goalies in the league. For those whom claim the DEVILS play is boring, then you really need to find a new sport to watch. They are sooooo exciting and defense wins championships. Just look at the last 10 years...3 Cups and one more on the way. Every one gives Jersey a bad rap for everything, but the one thing we will not stand for is trashing our hockey team. We may not sell out every game or be the rangers, but our points says it all this year. We are one of the best in the East, not to mention, the league. GO DEVILS....everyone else please stop slammin' our team. I don't tell you how bad the Caps or Hurricanes are doing this year so please show us the same respect.

devils have #1 goalie not #1 team bud sry but brody is your team if a team takes 35 shots on goal they will beat you. and the pens have the next best upcoming goalie in hockey you'll see in 2 or 3 years when brody retires and the devils will take the flyers place in the basement in the nhl. sorry just warning you. Oh, before i forget, remember we've also got the next #99 (dare i say the potential to be better???) Ha Ha sucks to be a devil fan!

Until at least June you are wrong. As stated above me they are neither the team with the most points now or last years Stanley cup winner.

I do think they have as good a chance as anyone to win the Cup..they have the best Goalie and it will be easier to reach the final coming from the East.

But we'll see.

Anyone see the contradiction?
