Tell him how you feel, about this. Because if you don't you could be in serious trouble. Please, remember dogs have owners, cats have staff.

if you break up, who gets the poor animal?

you are right, if you two don't have a good schedule for a dog, then it's not fair to the poor animal. puppies take a lot of time to train, and always need attention. when they are learning to poop/pee outside, you need to take them out every hour or so. cats are far more independant, but they still need love and attention, especially a kitten. make sure that your relationship is strong as well, because you aren't married, and you didn't mention that you were living together.
my husband and i got a puppy 6 mths ago, and it was hard as hell the first few months. it's like having a child together, with the vet bills, obedience school, chew toys, and food bills! basically, my puppy is a child, without labor pains!

please think it over. i would hate to see another puppy or kitten end up in a shelter because it didn't work out.

Well my opinion is that you shouldn't get any animal until you are married. So that way you won't have to decided if you do break up who gets the animal. But, what you should do if you still want to get an animal right now is sit down and talk to him about the maintenance for having a dog and the care. And see if he will decide that you should get a cat. But if you both want a dog just wait til the time is right and that you are ready to have a dog.

remind him of the cost of a dog and tell him that he is going to have to be the one to take the puppie out at midnight to go potty....then tell him all the wonderful things about kittens.....see if you can babysit a puppy that is about 6 months or so (they are chewing then) and make him take care of the puppy.....or take him to see some new born kittens and how cute they are...

Dont let him warm up to it. Just buy it and he will have to adjust. I did that to my husband and now he loves my kitty. Good luck to ya.
