Quick background: Multiple people were eating dinner, I decided to pay for one. When the bill came it said aroud $42. I tipped 8 and signed $50 for total. It turns out the bill was for $220, and the $42 was gratuitey. I must have misread because I assumed the waitress was going to seperate my bill from rest. They charged me the $270.The receipt I signed was totalled at $50. Can they charge me the $220? I only signed for $50! Whats thre rule/law on signatures and debit cards.

Your best bet would be to call someone at your bank. If you explain the situation they might could reverse the charge, and credit you back some or all the money. Also try calling the restaurant and tell them the situation and that the server screwed it up, they should fix it!!

If you signed instead of entering your pin, you used the card as a credit card. You generally have 60-90 days after billing date to dispute a charge. Call your bank and find out what your rights are before any more time goes by.

You need the receipt. Go to the restuaunt with your bank summary and ask to see the copy. DO IT SOON...before they say it is too late. The law depends on you area. HURRY Though, if you have problems- threaten to call one of your news stations...

What I want to know is how do you misread a $250.00 bill and only pay the $42.00 gratuity.
