I just found out I am having twins and I was wondering if I need to be taking more folic acid besides what is in my prenatal vitamin....I fully intend on calling my doc. tomorrow, but I just wanted to know what you guys' experiences are in it. Did your doctor up your dosage of folic acid when you were pregnant with twins? Thanks to all of you in advance!

This is all so surreal. Twins don't run in either of our families so I am in complete shock. I mean I just went to get an ultrasound today to find out exactly how far along I am...I have been saying "WOW" all day. I still almost can't believe it. If I didn't have pictures of them, I probably would think I am dreaming! I haven't had an increase in appetite at all though and I am almost 13 weeks along. Its weird b/c I still have some nausea, but I'm sure its normal. Thanks for your answers!

Folic acid is actually important just prior to pregnancy, that's why when you decide to have a baby you should increase or at least make sure you have adequate folic acid prior to conception. What its used for is important to some of the initial stages of development, particularly neural tube formation which is produced early so your body needs it to be there already, not just after. However, folic acid is found in common foods and so there's probably no worry that you didn't have enough to begin with. At this point, once your doctor diagnosed you with twins and prescribed your vitamin regimine, he did so with that in mind. If your concern is that two babies need more vitamins than one (which is logical) then you should voice it to him and ask if what he's told you is sufficient. The reason I say this is because the vitamins you're given are very rich sources, and there are several vitamins that are poisonous if you ingest too much of it per day (vitamin A and D poisoning for instance). People think that because they're essential then more is a good thing, but that's not the case, pregnant or not. It can certainly be too much of a good thing because these are cofactors of sensitive processes in your body and overloading at a molecular level is what causes these problems. I'm getting way technical I know, I just say this to say, don't up your vitamins without asking particularly given they are most likely already 100% (and more for some) of your daily value, you're already eating more food which is its own source of vitamings and minerals, so you can see how doubling a dose of prenatal vitamins is excessive in contrast to this.

Ask your doctor first. Don't do it on your own.

I found out I was preganant with twins around Christmas, and I upped my vitamin intake on my own, just because I have 3 older boys and know that I don't always eat right. I mean I don't eat junk, but I definitly don't eat everything I need to. I take 2 pre-natals, a cranberry pill (I get really bad bladder infections) 2 calcium and a B complex vitamin, which has folic acid plus all the other brain building vitamins. None of these can you overdose on, if you get to much they just come out in your urine. This way I know for a fact that my babies are getting enough nutrition to grow and develop, especially since the risk of them being born premature is so greater, I want to make sure they will be as healthy as can possibly be. When I asked my doctor, he just said, it can't hurt and it is better to be safe than sorry. He just made sure I wasn't taking on any that I could overdose on. Congrats on your twins, and good luck.

I'm not sure, but I do know that you will be hungrier than just having one. My sister had twins and she was constantly eating and drinking everything in sight (water, milk, juice). She was big, but looked great.

I truely believe that twins (multiples) are a gift from God. All babies are, but you rarely see multiples. They are amazing! Congratulations!!
