Tips are usually installed around the end of the pipe. The end of the pipe doesn't change size; it has extra shrouding.
Install new headers that dump to a larger pipe, get high-flow cats, and performance mufflers (Flowmasters are good); and that'll increase the sound of your car most definitely.
Or just cat-back the exhaust system.

Most exhaust tips are just for looks but if you reduce the ability to get rid of the exhaust gases by making the tailpipe smaller, you will get an increased sound but may damage your vehicle in the process. Get some flowmaster mufflers they help make your ride sound sweet!

Exhaust tips are nothing more then for looks, Its the muffler and the exhaust pipe size that determines the sound. I work in a garage and I do some exhaust work. The tip does not do anything for sound. What does determine the sound in the systme are the pipe diameter, and the muffler baffel design.

If you increasing the size, yes. Simple rule-the more room you have for an echo, the louder it will be, like yelling your head off in your room vs. at the grand canyon. My boyfriend put an exhaust tip on his b18b1 honda and it now sounds like a bee with digestion problems, whereas before it just sounded like a retarded mosquito.

No not really, it would quiet the car if any.... if it is a turn down tip, if it is a straight tip it will not affect the sound at all.

no it doesn't,all it does is look good,the sound is made from what ever type of muffler system ,and pipes you have on it,what comes out the end of it doesn't change the sound of it any at all, i own a shop and do this all the time,a lot of people wish it would change the sound some though,good luck,i hope this help,s.
