Try changing your oxygen sensors. They will effect your gas mileage. I had the same problem with a 98 blazer, I changed all 3 sensors and the gas mileage jumped 100 miles to the full tank.

It sounds like you may need to check the sensor on it and replace it.

Also low tire pressure will reduce gas mileage and loss of compression in your cylinders which would mean majpr work and this can be defined if you have smoke coming out of your exaust when you mash the gas. Blue smoke is transfluid and white smoke is oil burning.
Black smoke is rich gas.

You can tell allot about what is going on with your engine by simply looking at your spark plugs and know how to read them based on what the electrodes look like.

Words of wisdom.

Check the pressure in the tires to make sure they are up to pressure. Short trips during cold weather will use more gas because the choke is held in longer, making the engine run richer. As someone else said run the codes and see if something is wrong with the engine or a bad sensor.

i love the people who always answer "take it to the dealer".first of all always keep a steady eye on your tires(pressure, wear,)this is great for safety and maximizes gas.also keep your air filter clean.these are pretty basic things for good mileage.as far as the code check at auto zone it is free and a great tool but only applies to someone with a check engine light on.other than basic fuel saver steps there is a variety of fuel system problems that cant be determined unless you "take it to the dealer(or your own mechanic or someone you trust)good luck

One possibility would be the mass air flow sensor giving a false output voltage to the computer. This can make the computer "think" the engine needs more fuel than it does.

It won't trip the check engine light, just give a false reading if it is dirty.

Did you replace the O2 sensor? Take it to Autozone and have them run the codes, it's free and can point out other problems. My car failed the smog test, it seemed to be running fine but when I checked the codes there was a problem.

The O2 csensor may have something to do with it. I suggest you take it to a tuner who can get after market stuff, and have her/him fix your car. It is a mustang after all.

fuel pressure regulator??

if the diaphram in the regulator cracks, it will send raw fuel into the intake...poor mileage, engine runs rough.
