This is an urban myth. There are many scientific tests and research that show that fish have excellent memories. Humans have just perpetuated this myth because they have a need to believe that they are the smartest animals.

I agree, fish have a long memory. When my kids or myself walk up to my tank, several of the fish swim towards us. Some will actually follow us back & forth along the front of the tank. They do not do that for visitors.

We left for 2 weeks for vacation, when we came back, fish still followed us, but still avoided visitors.

So not only do they have a memory, but they also reconize us.

Simply, they don't. Mythbuster trained goldfish to swim through a "maze" and if you have fish, they know that it is feeding time and where you feed them at. They have the ability to learn and remember. Otherwise, they would die. Think about it. If they could only remember where a food source was for 3 seconds, how would they find it again?
