By not buying into the LIE that Communism is just a freedom of expression and a "fair" way to run a country.
We could have also blown up Russia who was sending and creating secret agents in the USA, many of which McCarthy discovered. Turns out when the Soviet archives were opened... McCarthy was RIGHT. THEY WERE COMMUNIST SECRET AGENTS INTENT ON OVERTHROW OF THE USA. Some of them even stole plans for the H-Bomb back to Russia.
McCarthyism is also refered to the blacklisting of some communist actors and others in Hollywood, some communist actors could not get jobs then due to thier beliefs.
If they believed in the similar evil to communism, and were Nazis no one would have complained about the treatment.
As of right now I don't hear of much crying about the conservative actors and screenwriters that are blacklisted for their political views this very day in Hollywood and suffer similar discrimiation (but it applies to a lot more people now).

War II was still fresh in the West's mind; a victory against blatant tyranny. Watching Stalin actions, the West begins to see another tyrant in the making. Communism became a direct threat to the free world and politicians saw a 'wave' they could ride. By feeding their constituents fears, they were able to gain more support, power, influence, etc. While Stalin was a tyrant, the communistic fear that was propagated by politicians that gripped the citizens was 'real' to them and therefore in need of ‘handling’ hence the trials. So to answer your question, the only way it could have been avoided was to dismantle the whole democratic system until the cold war ended.

If people were a little more in line with absolute truth, instead of the fantasies they'd fed on for onto four decades, that might've helped. It would've also squeezed out the communists and their bogus pandering. In effect, McCarthy was a type of communist himself. His associations then unknown were quite ' unusual ' if looked into. In every country, the forces of good and evil are constantly at war. They are not exclusively the guy selling drugs.

It could not have been avoided. At least as far as this reality stream is concerned. In parallel universes it has been avoided millions of times over.
It's simple how it started - FEAR.
If you allow yourself to be convinced that 'SOMEONE IS OUT TO GET YOU' then you will allow others to police and control you, for your own 'PROTECTION.'

Its all about fear. The problem with the news is that if it bleeds it leads. It really all starts their plus the Bush admin. always changing the terror alert level

joseph mccarthy was a great senator. he really DID weed out communists from the government and hollywood.
