I just recently got a snail for my aquarium and he is floating at the top of the tank.He is still under the water but floating at the top.Is he dead?

Has it been floating since you first got it, as in it never stuck to anything? If so then it probably is. Once they attach to something they don't typically let go. If its always floated since the moment you put it in then I'd call the pet shop and ask that very same question. Just look one up online, and if you got it from one and if it is indeed dead, they will most likely replace it because it should have been able to last longer. They guarantee the life of aquatic pets for so many days. By talking to them, they can even tell you if its possible that the conditions of your fish tank were not good. You can even take some of the water from your tank and they can check it out if you feel like going that far. But for the most part, call a local pet store and ask.

if a water creature is is just floating at the the top it is dead.

I think he might be...last time I checked, Snails normally stuck to the bottom of the tank. I might be wrong though...

Smell it. Dead snails smell awful. That's how you know.
