i have a 1958 ford straight 6 cylinder, 223, but i really want it to have that raw power sound, i want it to be loud and have a low rumble. i already have a glasspack exhaust and it sounds pretty nice but i want that v8 sound, or something close to it without me getting a v8.

so does anyone know a company that sells headers that make your v6 sound more like a v8??

I don't think that is possible. Years ago I remember seeing a Flowmaster kit that was supposed to make a V-6 Camaro sound more like an V-8 but when they started it up it really didn't sound much different. Basically all they did was add what looked like a little box in the exhaust system.

Hi,

In simple terms, an engine can produce sound from the exhaust because of the fuel burned in the engine. Some of the fuel's energy is converted into heat which drives the vehicle, some into waste heat and some into sound among others. The number of cylinder explosions in an engine per crankshaft revolution result in what is called an order of engine frequency. A V6 is a third order firing frequency and a V8 is 4th order with crankshaft rotation first order. In other words a V6 has three cylinder explosions per revolution of the crankshaft and a V8 has four.
Thus you cannot increase the firing frequency of a V6 without adding cylinders. So it will always sound like a V6.

You can if you are lucky, find a muffler that is tuned to resonate at third order of a v6 and you will get the "shell noise" similar to that of an old mussle car of the 60's but it will still give itself away as a V6

Good luck

There are headers for the 223 that let you run a dual exhaust. Those might make it sound less like a six. Check out Clifford Performance for parts like that, and ask them what it would sound like.

Patriot also makes headers for the 223 six; H8425 (uncoated), H8425-1 (coated) are said to fit '53-56 Ford trucks, but those are for a single exhaust.

Nothing. It will still sound like a six. Save your money, or go to the junk yard and buy a V8 for just about the same as headers.

You can make it sound like a V-8.... put on 2 1/2 pipes and run it to an original flowmaster 40 series.... that is the closest you will get.

It can be done, but it is difficult. First you have to remove the 6 cylinder and then relocate motor and trans mounts for the V-8.

NOT!!! Nothing will make a 6 cylinder sound like a V8. It is always going to sound like six cylinders firing, no matter how loud you try to make it...

I agree with Michael.
Lol my husband can always tell by hearing the vehicle if it is a 6 cylinder or 8. I guess you just can't hide it.
