I'm not sure what you mean by 'old fashioned'.
Do you mean using a razor as opposed to an electric? ITs easiest when starting I'd say to use a gel and a decent razor, and shave right out of the shower.
If you're thinking more 'old fashioned', I in fact just shaved a couple hours ago with a straight razor using a badger brush!
If you want to go that route, you do not need a badger brush to get started, you can buy a synthetic brush for under 10 bucks and see how you like it. You can get different types of soaps, but you want one made to work with a brush, they either come as a cream that foams up a lot, or as a solid soap in a bowl that you rub the brush into, which is what I use. Finally you need a razor. You do not need a 'good' razor (though I'm thinkign of getting one), you can buy fairly cheap handles that take disposable safety razors, which you snap in half. You can then see how you find it, and if you want to invest. If you are going full out, you can spend 50-a couple hundred bucks on a brush (mine was about 50 US, not bottom of the line, its 'best badger' which is like the second grade). I think a permenant razor and a razor strop would cost you another 70-150, but last your whole life!

A real badger shaving brush is very expensive. There are a couple of brands of shaving soap you can find in drugstores. Williams comes to mind.
I think you would be better off with Nivea Men shaving sensitive gel and an after shave balm for sensitive skin (it should have moisturizers and no alcohol) Nivea makes one of those too and so do a lot of other companies.
You can also get a men's face wash made by many companies. (I use Gillette's )
Shave right after you get out of the shower.
