It keeps the masses docile, under control, stimulates hunger for consumer goods, moves product, offers a solid 30 seconds of real news a day, entertains, anesthetizes, amuses, reinforces all the social mores (consumerism, patriotism, followership, etc), provides an outlet for TV preachers to spread the gospel. Overall, it is very hard to be positive about the mass media.
