I am writing an essay that has to deal with comparing and contrasting Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. We just read THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FUNN in English class. I had a hard time following along, so I would appreciate all of the knowledge you have on this topic. The best answers gets 10pts! Thanks so much.

Compare--both stories take place in the same time and start in the same place, with the same characters. They both poke fun and the society in the south before the Civil War, and they both have wonderful descriptions of life and characters.

Contrast--Tom Sawyer is third person narrative. Huck Finn is first person. Tom Sawyer is always getting his ideas from books and living out stories he finds there. Huckleberry Finn just goes on his adventure, because he believes he has to. Tom Sawyer is told by someone who is a person of the world and who understands what is going on around him. Huckleberry Finn is innocent and when he tells the story, he describes things just as they are, often telling the reader things that Huckleberry doesn't even realize himself.

Huck Finn
Socially, Huck comes from the lowest levels of white society. His father is a drunk who disappears for months on end and beats him for little reason. Although the Widow Douglas attempts to “reform” Huck, he stays independent and always thinks for himself. He has not been indoctrinated with social values in the same way a middle-class boy like Tom Sawyer has been. Since Huck is an outsider, he is skeptical of the world around him and learns to question the “morals” other people try to make him follow, like that African-Americas are inferior just because they’re black. Unlike Tom, Huck doesn’t think Jim is Miss. Watson’s property, and he thinks it is right to help Jim escape. However, unlike Tom, Huck is not a natural leader. Although he wants to help Jim, when Tom shows up near the end, Huck stops helping Jim because Tom said so.

Tom Sawyer
Tom is the same age as Huck and his best friend. Whereas Huck grew up as more of an outsider, Tom has been raised in relative comfort. His ideas on what is right and wrong are a combination of what he has learned from the adults around him and the ideas he’d gotten from reading adventure novels. Tom believes in sticking strictly to “rules,” even though his rules are often made up and make no sense. Tom is thus the perfect foil for Huck: his rigid adherence to rules and precepts contrasts with Huck’s tendency to question authority and think for himself.
