The musical is about a group of dancers at a Broadway audition. there are 17 dancers, and only 4 men and 4 women will be chosen. The work was created by Michael Bennett, who recorded two dance audition sessions and asked the dancers to reveal personal details of their lives. This blossomed into the 17 characters that we meet in the show. "What I did for Love" is the second song sung by the character Diana Morales. She is from the Bronx, and her main story arch is found in her first song "Nothing" in which she tells of her cruel high school acting teacher who she finally has the courage to stand up to. She has the closest character bond with Paul, who stands next to her in line. When Paul's leg gives out during the tap combination, Zach (the director holding the auditions) asks them "If today were the last day you could dance what would you do" Diana responds with "What I did for Love" She reminds us as people and as entertainers that if we give up our dreams, we give up everything. "Won't forget, can't regret, what I did for love"
hope this helps

It's a dance musical about 17 dancers auditioning for a Broadway show. Each tells/sings a bit about his/her personal life, growing up and/or dreaming of becoming a professional performer - struggles with their bodies, parents, sexuality, skills, peers, etc. The finalists are eventually chosen by the Director, and their individuality is stripped away, as they are dressed in identical gold costumes to become "One" chorus.
Diana Morales, a young Hispanic woman who sings earlier in the show about a discouraging high school acting teacher, sings "What I Did For Love" (with the rest of the company). The song is about striving to do what you love, despite the sorrow, rejection, and risk that you are likely to face along the way - and enjoying and appreciating the experience while it lasts.
The movie is very different from the stage version, which was based upon actual interviews with real performers.

It's a play about a bunch of Broadway "gypsies" (chorus dancers) going through the process of auditioning to be part of a new show. As the director (an unseen voice from somewhere in the theatre) puts the actor/dancers through their paces, we learn a bit about each of them.

A Chorus Line is actually a musical, not a play. It is one of the longest running musicals on Broadway. "What I Did For Love" is the main ballad in the 2nd act. Here's a link to the musical's official website where you can read more about it....

It shows people going through the trials of trying to land a dancing role in a Broadway troupe. There's a movie on it you can rent, with Michael Douglas.
