A lot of things could be the cause of your slowness of you computer.

1st - the biggest offender would be the ammount of programs you have runnign in the background. The more you have running, the more resources (such as ram, harddisk space, processor load) it takes up. Try closing some of the programs that are not needed in your system tray (located in the lower right corner). You should be albe to right click and close on most of those. You can also press ALT - CTRL - DEL to bring up the task manager to close some programs that way. Be aware that if you do it that way you may close a program that you need or want open if you dont know the name of the task running it. Anything you close either from the Task Manager or from the system tray, will only be for this session. Once you restart your machine it will all come back. You will have to open each program separately and go through the options or settings to de-select the "start at windows statup" or something similar.

2nd - Another way to disable programs that are opened up at startup would be using the MSCONFIG command. This would be for advanced users. If you click on the Startup tab you can de-select the programs you wish not to start up when windows starts up. Once you have made your selections, click Apply and then ok. The system will ask to restart, if you want click yes. Once the sytem restarts it will indicate that you are running on a selective startup.

3rd - Registry cleaners do wonders. You have a good registry cleaner you should scan for registry issues every month or so. This will find missing, old, or inaccurate registry settings that could be slowing down your computer. Make sure you back up your registry before any changes are made. Most registry cleaners will prompt to back up your registry before cleaning the registry.

A good overall program for cleaning temp files on the computer, plus looks for registry entries that are incorrect would be CCleaner. You can find it on www.download.com as well as www.filehippo.com

Sometimes when you install stuff on your computer it 'helpfully' autoloads when windows does. This uses up CPU time and memory. If too much memory is getting used up windows sticks some of the stuff in memory onto the harddisk and then when it needs that data back in memory it has to get it from the hard disk again which REALLY SLOWS YOU DOWN.

Find options in your programs to tell them not to auto-load and/or uninstall stuff you don't use...
