She wasn't respected or valued at her aunt's home and she was belittled and tolerated at her school.
When she got to Thornfield, she was showered with affection by ebullient little Adele, and she was respected as a peer by the caretaker Mrs Fairfax. When Mr Rochester came home, he spoke with her frequently and bantered and traded barbs with her; a type of relationship she had never had before. He challenged her and made her think, and rewarded her for being plain-spoken and honest. Other than Helen, he was her first true friend. She finally felt cherished and honored and valued for the first time. That was huge in the world of Jane.

well at thornfield she met the little girl ( adele) and she became more confident. She felt jealously toward Blanche because she was in love ith Rochester only to find out he was arried to Bertha ( u should read The Wide Sargasso Sea { it's about Bertha b/c they got married}) after that she left Thornfield...and came across her family. She grew as a person. she became stronger and independent. Then again she never did depend on or like anymore except Helen.
