When I was a counsler at a camp, I learned alot of how to do this.

1. find smaller things, small sticks, pocket lint, things like that, the bigger the bonfire the more you want. don't use leaves, leaves create a lot of smoke, smells bad, and gives toxins in the air.
2. build the first base, this can be any way, we did kind of a teepee surrounded by the small kindle, this should be medium sizedand not too big or too small. remember to leave one section open to light the inside.
3. build the out side, we did either a bigger teepee, or a logged cabin design, the log cabin design works best when it's windy and you want more of a light show, the shadows it gives is pretty cool. the teepee is used more for heat and will burn faster or won''t burn at all if it's too windy. these logs should be bigger because they are whats going to keep the fire going. Always remember to keep medium or large peices by the side and every thing should be dry.
4. find a long sturdy stick and keep it aside to light the fire, you can use that as a torch, put something on top of it, we made quite a few, one we taped a roll of toilet paper to the end. another ididea is put an old shirt or towell in karasene, let it soak for a little while then bring it out, make sure to wrap it around the stick first. then you can dip it in wax to make it last longer.
5. last thing you want to do is light the torch and stick it in the center of the fire where you left the space for and leave it in there, do not try to take it back out, let it stay in there to get the fire going if you did it correctly it the fire should go with out any further help.

I hope this was of help to you.

0h, I changed the link below to show some cool things. It shows that some metels when they heat up, the fire will actualy change to cool colors, they actualy work. it also shows different types of wood that will burn very well.

make sure the area is good enough for a fire...no hazards or possible dangers...then stack the wood(in a tee-pee type style.) fill the middle with kinling or small peices of easily lighted wood an whoala! light it up and just keep it going. its a good idea if at the beach to keep some water in a bucket just incase clothing or something catches..the same goes for anywhere else. my dads house had a pit in the back for bonfires(big backyard) we used to keep the water hose handy just in case. you can call your local fire deptment as well. Tell them your going to roast a pig(even if your not) they will issue you a permit and give you a pamphlet on everything and more that i just mention. have fun!!

How bout advice on how to build one instead.

Start with some small kindling. then add bigger and bigger pieces of wood.

some designs are the ultimate log cabin and the gigantic tee-pee.
