I'd like to know if spending $599 for a day trip from Fairbanks to Barrow is worth the money. Anyone?

I enjoyed going there for 2 days, but we were being hosted by the hospital, saw them land two whales, the northern lights, and met a lot of locals. Things that are hard to do on the tourist trip. And impossible in the summer (no night and no whale hunting).

The best deal to get to Nome or Kotz or Barrow is to do your trip as award travel (20,000 miles) and book round trip Barrow (for instance) with a layover in Anchorage. Spend a day or 1.5 days in Barrow and one or two or 6 weeks in Anchorage. That is a allowed way to cash award miles. I've booked it a number of times for adventurous friends coming up.

The north slope is impressive for its flatness and the number of lakes (over 3 million) and you don't truly appreciate that until you fly over it.

A cheaper way to go would be to drive from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle or almost all the way to Prudhoe Bay. But that takes a lot more time and it a pretty serious road trip. Doable in a sedan, but its a long road, half of it gravel, and there are few services on the way.

Barrow is quite unique. It is a small Eskimo village on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, and is a great place to learn of the culture of our Eskimo people. It also happens to have the best Mexican food on the planet... Pepe's.

Home to the Will Rogers and Wiley Post Memorial, it is a place you will always keep with you. Yes, it is worth the $$$ to visit... even if for only a few brief hours.

If you want to be able to say you were inside the Arctic circle....go for it. Otherwise save your money and spend it in Fairbanks.
