how is light a relevant factor for aquatic creatures

For aquatic animals, light is associated with a direction: Up!

Many such creatures move towards light, because it is only in the upper levels near the surface that photoplankton (microscopic aquatic plants) can grow. Thus, both the photoplankton and the creatures that eat photoplankton (such as brine shrimp) go towards light.
