Gay people must join in self-mockery if they laugh. So many do to avoid being labeled as 'so sensitive' or having 'no sense of humor.' Try growing up realizing that everything from your first crush to the person you want to marry is a joke. Sometimes it's a lot worse than that; oh, abomination, forbidden, illegal, etc. Once you're off into that journey, keep laughing at yourself lest you be labelled humorless. You'll need to be stronger than your adversary. You'll need to listen to many ignorant people (hundreds, maybe more, over a lifetime) who know not what they are doing and, oddly, could not explain why their jokes are funny. Your behavior will determine whether you have the character to forgive on a daily basis, even as you may be mocked, ridiculed, ostracized. So try that; give it about 20 years. At that point we'll see if you're still laughing. Recall also that a 'gay joke' is an oxymoron. A joke must be funny. Someone is gay; why is it funny? Can you answer that? Answer is no, because there's nothing funny. I'm not mad, I'm just saying what makes it a joke? Yet, most gay people still laugh right along with those who mock them; they even make jokes about themselves. This is the origin of 'camp.' If they don't, well, doesn't that mean they have no sense of humor? In closing, gay people have 2 choices in this bizarre society: (1) participate in self-mockery convincingly--really laugh, like their life really is a joke (2) not get the joke, fail to joyfully mock themselves on cue whenever straight people say so, & thus be viewed as an overly sensitive, immature with a dire lack of humor. It's a fun life, even with straight people around (whose love lives can be very, very serious--certainly not the butt of every joke at the drop of a hat). Shall we start with your first crush, or your 'marriage'? Shall we mock just those, or everything in between.. everyone you ever loved? Should we laugh at you alone, in addition, because you're 'straight'? What's funny? What are we mocking, exactly? I also wonder where & when it will end ... Really, I dare you to try it. With all due respect, fear was our teacher; I'm afraid you wouldn't last a week. *laughs at myself in absence of any joke, just for the hell of it, demonstrating my continued lack of oversensitivity* I wasn't laughing at you.. ; )

They usually only get offended if they know the person telling the joke is a homophobe, or is just being mean and obnoxious. Gay people tell gay jokes. Straight FRIENDS of gay people can tell gay jokes to gays, and they won't be offended, but if I were to stand in the middle of a city bus, and rattle off some nasty gay joke, of course a gay person would be upset by that. It's rude and shows no class, or respect for anyone within earshot.

Probably because people are VERY insensitive when making 'gay' jokes. There is a history of GAY bashing everywhere and people think that gay folks are fair game for their hate!
Just look on here and see how many 'loving Christians' have mean spirted things to say about gays and others of different beliefs.
I think that the reactions that they have are appropriate with the backdrop of increasing hate and discrimination that they have to face.

Most people from our society do not accept gay relationship as they think that this is total opposite composition of nature.
Therefore, gay people still have a feeling of minority community even though they may be doing well in their professional area.
Since they have not been accepted very well and have not been granted equal opportunity status in society, it is quite obvious that they feel dejected and get irritated by simple negetive comments.
Though debate continues on accepting gay relations as their community is growing.
I hope this helps you in finding the answer of your questions.

I don't think that gay people are overly sensitive. I think they are probably a bit sick and tired of being the butt of many jokes, and not being widely accepted just because people don't agree with or understand their way of life.

Because they have had to learn from a very young age to cope with people who would take pleasure in despising them without regard to their feelings.

Let's see if we can find that aspect about you that people irrationally and unfairly condemn you for and ridicule you for. Bet we could find one if we knew you personally. Then we could persecute YOU unjustly and vilify YOU unjustly and ridicule YOU unjustly. Would that give you any insight at all. We can only hope.
