Tiger salamanders are incredibly hardy little beasts and look great as well. I'd suggest looking up care sheets for them on the internet. I've kept two as temporary pet's that I found in hazardous places in the enviorment then re-released into the wild after a short rehab.

Just a smalls tory for how hardy they are, I once found one in the floor drain at a resteraunt. The Cook was trying to wash dishes and he started screaming like a little girl, I went back there and saw a Tiger Salamander swimmin in the drainage. Released him later that day, he was nice and healthy. Most amphibians would probably die from all the toxins (soap's, bleach, cleaners) etc... they'd be exposed to swimmin up a drain.

Edit: To clear the poster below me, no I mean Tiger salamander, found in the US. Newt's are NOT Salamanders, they are closely related, but not the same. Source listed below for Tiger Salamanders

the best salamander is prob a fire salamander. keep an adult in a 10 gallon cage that is 1 part land and 2 parts water.

I'm thinking the person in the answer before mine meant to say fire-bellied newt. The fire-bellied newts are a better beginner salamander than a fire salamander, plus fire's don't require a swimming area, need cool temperatures, are a lot more expensive!
