There was a book I used to read as a child, it was very beautifully illustrated. It was about this boy (I'm pretty sure he was Native American) that made a small white horse out of clay, and one day this horse came to life. It's a really beautiful book that somehow I have lost. Does anyone know what this book is called?

Could it possibly be from the 1940's? There is a book called "Deegie and the Fairy Princess" by Ruth Rempel that was published back then, and it has a similar storyline -- Deegie is a little boy who plays with his animal friends until one day, a cruel wind blows everybody away. A fairy appears to Deegie and shows him his new home. He sits by a brook and cries, then realizes he can create his little animal friends from the clay. He hopes they'll turn real, then makes it so by using the fairy's wand.

The illustrations are often described as beautiful. They are a bit reminiscent of the Campbell Soup Kids, to me -- everyone is cherubic and everything is pastel.

I hope this helps!

Is this maybe a Paul Goble books? He does nice Native American picture books.

It sounds familiar. Check with your local children's librarian, they might know. www.oyate.com reviews Native American books, too.
