There are some certification programs/classes out there that may be helpful, but in general, you need:
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and writing)
- Typing
- Computer skills - basic office automation tools (ie Microsoft Officie)
- Organization skills
Good luck.

The hell with going to school for a job in Administrative Assistant, schooling for such position is a waste of time and money. Go to your local library or bookstore and pick up on some self-help books.
To get on the fast track without schooling, you need to find a job that carries the same skills as an administrative assistant and do the job part time. Remember that the job you are fist applying for is not an administrative assistant position, it's a clone that will help you later to get the admin job. In other words, get experience and some good references.
You don't need to show the HR department any degree for an Admin position, all they will do at most is give you a few test on basic computer skills and such.
Skills you will use if such position.
Outlook (it is a must); Word (also, a must) Excel (good to know but not really necessary) Good writing skills and the ability to proofread is a plus. Of course, you must know some general internet usage and research. Filing and fax is also part of the job, but anyone can teach you that within five minutes.
Good luck.

Administrative assistant is just another title for secretary. There are lots of titles for secretary...legal secretary, medical, executive, etc.
To learn to be a secretary, check out your local business college or community college and see what business courses or curriculum they offer
If you can already type and are up on the latest word processing, spreadsheet packages, apply for a job at a temp agency. They will give you additional training and you can work in an office environment and upgrade your skills. Also, temping will help you find a good job...temp agencies usually send you to companies that have job offerings

You will need to take an Executive Secretarial course at your local community college. You'll be good to go. Duration is approximately 6-9 months. Email me if you have any further questions...I graduated with a 98% average and loved every minute of it. I got pretty sh*tty grades in highschool!

I done a traineeship. It is where you work doing business admin and study to get your certificate at the same time. The business pays for it all, it's the way to go. I'm in australia though.
You have to complete Certificate 3 in business administration.

AA is simply a receptionist. This is the kind of job that only requires a HS diploma. If you are going to take a course, take something that teaches more than just answering telephones and filing.
