To get into the centre of KL use the KLIA Express service. It's a very modern rail link to Sentral Station and costs RM70 return from the airport terminal. Time of journey 28 minutes. From there you can get a taxi to wherever you are staying.

Obvious places to visit are the Twin Towers however you might be disappointed to learn that you cannot visit the top and the bridge joining the 2 towers on the 42nd floor is as high as you will be allowed. It's still a great view point but visit the KL Tower and restaurant fr a higher vantage point over the city.

There are numerous shopping areas but the one I know best is at Bukit Bintang. Here you can find everything in an area that is safe to walk and in modern suroundings on a huge scale.

Public transport is cheap and an overhead monorail system circles most of the popular areas of the city. It is very modern and reliable. Taxis are also very cheap but can get delayed in the heavy traffic especially at rush hour periods.

Food is incredibly cheap unless you choose to eat in your hotel which charges tourist prices. I recommend that you find some local restaurants where the food is amazing and great value. Drinks again can be expensive in the hotels and much cheaper in various bars scattered around the Bukit Bintang area. Most offer Happy Hour deals early evening with a 2 for 1 offer being popular. The bars become very lively and full of very pretty girls however be aware that many of them are working girls and are not looking for a long term relationship. Especially any who say they come from Thailand, Vietnam, Russia or the Philipinnes.

I hope this helps as a general guide when you first arrive. It's a great city with lots to do for all types of visitor.

I visited KL last May and loved it. It was amazing.
I would definately use the KLIA expres train from within the airport to the city centre. It's mega cheap RM70 return and takes approx 30 minutes. Taxis are double that and take twice as long without traffic also the taxi drivers know to charge you more.
For the return journey if you're travelling with Cathay or Malaysian Airlines you can check in at KL train station and check you bags through. It's brilliant as it frees you from having to carry bags and you miss the queues at the airport check in.
Whilst in KL you must walk as many places as possible as it give you bearings of th city. My husband and I were in KL for 4 days and knew the city centre extremely well by the end of the trip.
Someone has mentioned to be careful walking the streets well don't take any notice. We aren't very streetwise at all (we live in a little village) and we never felt uncomfortable. Obviously you have to watch your bag just like any main city (look at London!)
There are so many tourists that no one stands out as being an obvious tourist type.
Taxis are negotiable. Before you get in the taxi tell them where you want to go and ask how much. If you tll them it's too much and look as though you'll get a different taxi they suddenly lower the cost.
You have to visit Batu Caves just outside the city. Catch a taxi (ask your hotel roughly how much it should be) and negotiate again. It's an amazing place. It's a cave with hundreds of steep steps to the top. There's a massive huge gold hindi statue at the bottom which is amazing. Inside the caves there is a Hindi temple and hundreds of monkeys climbing the rock face. They are tame and will try to steal food. You have to go!
Shopping is excellent Bintang is one of the best shopping centres. Also go to Pentaling Street in Chinatown in the evening for the watch/bag/cd stall. Make sure you barter a lot there. Expect to barter to at least half of their start price!
Have an excellent time. Wish I was going back!!

You can pay 300RM to a tour company to go to this modern city 25km south of KL or you can easily do it privately at a fraction of the cost. Get yourself to Sentral Stesen and purchase your ticket to Putrajaya (9.90RM single fare) from the first ticket counter on the right after you enter. This is the KLIA Transit Link. (Do not confuse this with the KLIA Expres which goes to the International Airport without stopping.) Your train stops only once before you alight at Putrajaya. The train is brilliantly modern, speedy and as smooth as silk. When you arrive, follow the signs to the taxi rank which is below the train line and on the other side. There you will find a counter where cashiers quote you for the deal you want. You pay and are led to a waiting taxi which takes you around Putrajaya with some commentary and all questions answered. It is difficult to convey the absolute luxury of this city, a leader in design and architecture throughout the world. It opened in 1995. You can see the mosque, Prime Minister's Office, Residence and of couse the offices of many other Ministers. There are outstanding parks, gardens and bridges. The taxis cost 30RM per hour and an hour while the minimum is probably just about right. Obviously, you could have your taxi return you after an hour or two to the train station for the ride back to KL. A good idea, though, is to add on a visit to Mines Shopping Centre. This added 23RM to the hourly cost giving a total of 53RM. The centre is built on a disused mine which has filled with water creating an enormous lake. It is somewhat reminiscent of Venice. After you have walked around the shops and enjoyed the airconditioning, you board a boat on the ground floor and for 2RM, you are taken to the first stop which is beside the Serdang railway station. From here a single ticket to KL costs 1.60RM. So all up, two people can do the trip for approximately 80RM.

A visit to Putrajay is a must if you are in Kuala Lumpur and so easy to do by yourself.

Sunway Shopping Centre

You can get yourself quite easily to this Egyptian themed shopping centre by taking the KTM train from Central to Subang Jaya (1.60RM). At Subang Jaya station, there is a shuttle bus which takes you to the shopping centre for 80 sens in about ten minutes. It's a good idea to note the route number of the bus for the return trip. The drop off and pick up point is right outside the centre's main entrance. Inside, there is a great variety of shops and eating outlets. On the ground floor, there is an ice skating rink and from McDonalds you have a panoramic view of the wave pools etc of the theme park. Well worth a morning or afternoon!

If you are in KL, i would suggest:

1. Twin Towers - Its free but get their early as it gets booked up.
2. KLCC shopping centre - Next to twin towers
4. Batu Caves - A cave up a load of steps with bats and buda stuff.
5. Bukit Bintang shopping centre - Ok but can easily be missed
6. Central market - has old local stuff
7. Petaling Street - A large market with counterfeit stuff, (from clothes to jewellery) but only after 6pm. - Next to central market - NOT TO BE MISSED, but watch your valuables as there are thieves about.

Get a taxi everywhere but after 4pm traffic is horrendous and it will take you ages so try and catch the sky train.

Alway ask taxis to run by the meter - But give them a decent tip.
If you cant find one that will run by the meter agree a price beforehand and don't tip.

For food try the local food cafe/restaurants. Its very cheap for a decent portion about 5 ringgit.

Talk to the local people, some of the friendliest people on earth! The second language is English.Enjoy the highly delicious food, satay, mee hoon(noodles),nasi lemak(rice dish with prawns and eggs)and try this drink,Chendol:coconut juice, milk, caramel and crushed ice.
If you are there long enough take a trip to Singapore by train. You will always remember it!Dont take too many clothes, its very cheap and very hot.Usually in the late twenties(Centrigade.)
Enjoy life,my friend.Selamat malam(Good night)

Before you go to KL, have you go through what you should and shouldn't do?Firstly, it's important what kind of weather you're expecting this time, ok? And next where do you plan to go eg. to shopping or laze around the beach...Of course depend where you're from, pack your clothing as light as possible as they are many shopping malls for you to shop around.
If you you're beach goers, then leave your clothing behind....Food? No problem, you wont get starve here in KL...
Women? Plenty...Just don't be a sex maniac!!!

KLCC is a must. Beautiful sight.
Putrajaya is nice. But a bit far from KL.
Genting Highlands is more than just a casino. Weather is cooler & view is fantastic.
