general meade commanded the northern army and general robert e. lee commanded the southern confederate states forces!!!many truly able and reslendant officers were arrayed on either side of the battle of titannic forces!!the south had j.e.b. stewart,a.p. hill, george pickett, amongst others equally worthy of mention!!the north had buford who aided in the battles initial phases to great advantage to delay the massive southern armies deployment in line of battle and more incisive reconnoissance of the union forces positions and disbursement!!george armstrong custer protected the union left flank again a strong rear attack from artilley and calvary in a much ignored phase of the battle!!henry heth, and many other subordinate officer beneath them stemmed the tide of the south's proud and courageous forces!!a better and more complete idea of the battle COULD be garnered from the truly great movie made on the subject!!many of the political issues involved are touched on with alight being shone one the men of both determinations to their grace and credit!!we are still either blest or burdened with the results of that crucial conflict for good or ill!!
