Courage is Self-Sacrifice. No more, no less. Courage is what one is willing and able to surrender for a cause, whether it's comfort, safety, life, or ???.

True courage is not, as many say, "doing what one knows is right, even in the face of opposition", but rather doing something with complete uncertainty, a willingness to take actions without knowing their consequences or the will to take a step in the dark with only a hint that there is ground there.
To do what one believes is right when all others think he/she is wrong may be 'courageous', but that is only one description of this example. The actual definition would be more along the lines of 'to have confidence', 'pride', or 'faith'.
Courage is something that comes from within even moreso than faith. Faith can be encouraged or developed from a lifetime of doctrine (albeit still comes down to a personal active decision), whereas courage has no external reassurances like faith or confidence which develop and encourage it.
So, to reiterate, I believe that courage is not necessarily 'knowing' how or when to do something, but 'not knowing' how or when and doing it anyway without great confidence or conviction, but also without major hesitation.
(Even though it can still be seen as 'courageous' to do something with hesitation or with conviction - the difference is that these things do not DEFINE the word courage, but the word courage can be an aspect of their descriptions, or one of several adjectives used to describe them)

A coward is someone who is afraid and withdraws from unpleasant situations and does not have the fortitude (courage) to deal with the situation. Whether it is everyday life or on the battlefield.
On the other hand, one who is fearful but does what must be done to deal with a situation, again, whether in everyday life or on the battlefield is called courageous and a hero.

Courage is about doing something you know needs to be done, but you're afraid of and you do nevertheless. Perseverance and courage are very different concepts.

when I think about courage i'm usually afraid, I think that atleast the every-day kind of courage (the only kind I can say I've ever had to have) for me is going on when you are scared, not letting fear stand in your way, its not being unafraid its doing what you need to do even though you are scared.

i consider courage to be knowing that something is going to be tough and doing it anyways. or being scared or terrified and still continuing. i think it is also knowing which battles to fight and yes which battles to accept defeat or just not even enter into. that is my lowly opinion of the definitions of Courage.

You should always know when to quit, but never quit before
you get there.
That isn't courage its perseverance.
Courage, on the other hand, just happens.

People should know when they're conquered.
Courage is when you're afraid of something but you still go ahead and taste it, do it, whatever.
Someone said: "To see what is right and not to do is want of courage".
