okay ladies, I know this is a popular topic and I need some advice. (sorry its a long one!)

Firstly I still hadn't gotten my period by my sixteenth birthday, so I went to the doctor, got a sonogram, tested my horomones, and went through the usual routine. During the summer, I was put on some medication to give me my period just to make sure that I could have it. It came for the usual amount of days, but 4 months later it still wasn't back. I was perscribed birth control to regulate my period and the day after my appointment, I got my period naturally. That was December, and it still hasn't come back yet. Is this a concern? I am a very active person, I swim about 5 hours a day and eat healthy. I am 5'8" and weigh about 120-125 lbs. What should I do?

I think it would be a good idea for you to see a board-certified gynecologist.

A lot of women make the mistake of thinking a visit to a family doctor or to Planned Parenthood is suitable but they aren't in cases like this. I want you to get the best treatment and expertise possible.

I'm a little concerned about your height and weight. If you swim that much you're building lean muscle and it weighs more than fat. So you almost sound a little under-weight to me but you say you eat healthy.

Hormones, metabolism, the fact that they interact - very complex, so all the more reason to see a gynecologist regularly until you get a diagnosis.

You are probably not ovulating yet, this should begin after your periods become regular

To maintain a regular menstrual cycle, fat content of the body must be 22% or greater. If you are this active every day then your body may have concluded it would not be good for you to get pregnant yet. (maybe your running from tigers).

Some of the aspects of family structure and function reported to be independently associated with later puberty:

* Larger family size
* Warmer, closer or more positive relationship with biological father
* Warmer, more supportive, low stress family environment
* Having a number of older sisters

The last poster that asked about a thyroid problem was right on the line of what I was thinking as well. Pls go back to your dr and have them do the entire thyroid panel of blood tests to see if could be your problem.

You can find out more about the tests used from the thryoid newsletter from about.com. The link to info about thyroid issues is found at: http://www.thyroid.about.com

You should not do anything. Let nature take its course. You are young, you should love that you don't have to deal with Aunt Flo right now! Cherish it! Also, being that you're very active and in water often (which stops bleeding for the most part anyways...) is probably why you haven't yet had to deal with one of the many wonderful things that us women have to deal with!

Really active, really really active???

Normal, because your body doesn't actually have anything extra to use. Read about women in the navy seals they stop having their periods too... Also marathon runners, women with too little fat..

Just have a Debbie cake and be happy you are so thin!!!

Were you checked for a thyroid problem? My daughter had the same thing happen to her and it was her thyroid. She was put on pills and is now still on them after 15 years.

maybe youre under weight, you said youre very active. I know if you dont weigh a certain amount or have a certain percentage of body fat that your female system gets a quark in it.
