I have a small yard that I'm renovating and I was told I would need to put a drain in... How hard is this and what is the process?

You can use porous underground drainage at 2M interval. Its a kind of hose made of synthetic fiber available in 2" dia. and 4" dia sizes which is burried underground. You have to excavate a trench of about 1' wide and 18" deep and lay about 2" lean concrete (or geo-textile) on the base, let dry and put the hose over it and fill it with course aggregates (1/8"-1/4") and the final 2" with garden soil flush with ground level. Incorporate a chamber at the junctions or ends of the hose and use PVC pipe to join there on.
The hose can be joint at Tee junction by tying up to the main line.
Have a try.
