The ones that are not on MTV. Any rock band from the early 60's to mid 90's should be good.

No music right now on MTV, or Mainstream is good. However, to be honest, there are some good indie bands out there right now: The Shins, The Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Razor light, Social Distortion, Flogging Molly, Augustana, Civil War Kids, Dropkick Murphy's. And Coldplay is a mainstream band that has talent and they are new same with Velvet Revolver.

First, what kind of rock are you looking for? Do you want softer more contemporary rock like Eric Clapton? Or dirty hard rock like the Oblivions? Or the usual stuff that gets a lot of airplay like Coldplay? The really really good stuff in any 'rock genre' isn't likely to get a whole lot of radio airplay. Look for the book "Unknown Legends of Rock 'n Roll", there's good starter material on bands that didn't get a lot of recognition but they should have. Ignore publications like Rolling Stone for guidance and really it's all a matter of opinion so just listen to anything that sounds interesting to you. Don't judge what is good or bad by what others have to say about it.

It all depends what you like and what you mean by rock. Fall out Boy can be thought of as a rock band, but they are better known as an emo band, even though their new song smacks of R & B. Lamb of God, Trivium, Machine Head, and Mastodon are kicking major butt right now, but they may be too heavy to be considered a rock band. How about Tool, Godsmack, or even Nickelback? For my money, the best "rock" band now and forever, will be AC/DC. Besides they don't mind when people call them a rock band.
