I am being trained for new position in banking and want to know if I should just shut up and let my trainer do her thing. I don't want to come off stupid or anything but I don't want to looks as if I don't need her help. For anyone who has been in my situation, please share your thoughts.

When you are trying to teach someone a new skill, do you want him or her to catch on quickly or would you like that person to sit quietly and listen to what you have to say? In other words, let you show me how knowledgeable you are in such area.

Again, please share your thoughts.

How should one behave in training?

Behave honestly. You are not being judged nearly as much on how quickly you learn, as how well you perform the task after being trained.

I am inferring that the training is 1 on 1. If that is the case, there should be a lot of interaction. Be attentive, don't interrupt and absolutely don't play dumb. If you don't understand something and she is moving on, let her know. If she asks you if you understand and you do or don't, let her know. If she is going to slowly or repeating things she doesn't need to, pick a time to politely let her know that she can go faster. When given the chance to demonstrate that you have learned, do. Don't shrug anything off as being easy.

The most important thing is a successful training session, which means that you will now be capable to do whatever it is that you are being trained to do. No one cares if you are a super quick study or a little slower than normal as long as you are completely trained. The worst outcome possible is that you act like you understand, but you don't know what you are supposed to know.

I would have to say that its better to not act or pretend at all. If you act knowledgeable you may come off as a know-it-all. If you pretend not to know you may seem a little slow. The way you should behave is like someone who wants to learn their job. You should never hesitate to ask questions if you arent sure about something and realize that this person had to be trained at one time just like you. Good luck at your new job!

What you want to do is work on your active listening skills. Then, when the time comes to show that you are absorbing the material, weave your knowledge into your responses and questions to her. Don't be totally quiet...that is annoying! But don't come off as pretentious or inflexible (as in "my last company did it a lot better" either. There will be plenty of time, after you've settled, to add your experience to move ahead.

And congratulations on the new postion!

I was a trainer for quite a few subjects while in the Army. One thing I DIDN'T want was a bunch of people who sat there and didn't ask any questions. Unless it's a super-easy task, there's going to be some doubt or confusion somewhere in there. Ask sensible questions, repeat steps of procedures back to them, say SOMETHING that makes them know that you're paying attention.

It depends if you know anything at all about working in a bank? If you do, let your trainer know what bank was it, but to be on the safe side I would let trainer train you so you can keep your job longer. Your trainer would tell your suprevisor that you have a BAD ATTITUDE. In my previous position at the Federal Reserve Bank, my trainer told me that she told my former supervisor that some of the people before me didn't listen to her, so he had to get rid of them,so be quiet.
