okay, start by writing two equations which you can derive from the information given. Since it says there are 50 coinds in all you know D + N= 50 (d= dimes n=nickels)
YOu also know that 10D + 5N=4.30

SInce dimes are worth ten cents and nickels are worth five cents than 10 x however many dimes there are + 5 times however many nickles there are will equal the total amount of money.
SO your equasions are

N+D=50
10D+5N=4.30

Now you can use these equations to solve for one variable. Lets solve for N.

I want to solve for n by canceling d out of both equations so I will multiply the firstr equation by -10

(-10)N + (-10)D=(-10)50

-10N -10D= -500

Now combine the equasions

-10N -10D= -500
+ 5N+ 10D=4.30
--------------------------
-5N= -70

N=14 There are 14 nickels
so since there are 50 coins, then there must be

36 dimes

Does the equasion work? Im me when you check it, and if you have questions.

If you're not into writing and solving equations, you can always use guess and check. Make a chart of # of dimes, # of nickles, total. I usually start by dividing the number I have by 2.So 25 dimes =2.50 and 25 nickles = 1.25 and the total is 3.75 which is not enough. I increase the dimes because that will increase my dollar amount. I did 28,30,32,34, and then at 36 I got the answer. 36 dimes and 14 nickles gives me $4.30. Have fun......
