It sounds like a scam. If you cashed the check at the bank where the check was drawn then you should be fine, however if you deposited the check into your own account it may be bad. A popular scam is to give someone a check for an amount over what it should be and then ask to have the difference sent back. Once you realize the check was bad they already have your money!!

They can get your bank account number off the back of the canceled checks endorsement. They would need more than that. At this point you have already cashed his check, I would watch your account for anything unusual, but with just your checking account number he can't do much. If by some slim chance he did commit fraud it is fraud against the bank, and any money fraudulently removed from your account will be reimbursed by the bank.
I have assumed you called his bank to make sure the check was good and withheld the title to the car. In the future for car sales except cash or a cashiers check for payment. NO PERSONAL Checks.

As insane as it sounds, at my bank you have to put your own checking account number on the back of the check you are wanting to cash, along with your signature, which seems an incredible breech of security, and so, it seems to me that if the other person gets their canceled check with their next month's statement, well, they've got your account number, and so it just makes the theft a whole lot easier. I just asked my wife and she said we don't get our canceled checks back with our next month's statement anymore, only a copy of them, so the check writer won't be able to get your account number any more, unless you write the number on the memo line at the bottom left hand corner of the front of your check. Obviously you don't want to do that. God Bless you. I hope I understood your question correctly, but, reading the other answers, maybe I misunderstood your question. God Bless you.

There have been a bunch of news reports about this sort of thing. Do Not send any money. And Do Not use the money from the check. It WILL bounce. Thank God you put this on as a question - all these people are helping you!

You said you cashed the cheque?
Does that really mean you deposited the cheque into your account and are waiting for it to clear?
IF the lattter is the case then NO he won't have access to your bank account but access to your good nature in the hope you send them cash because you sympathise with their situation!
I am presuming you are going to wait and see if the cheque clears BEFORE you give them the car that you are selling to them for the amount written on the cheque, RIGHT?

DON'T wire him any money until his name is signed on that title! This IS a scam. My son almost lost $10K with this, so do NOT do it! No, he can't do anything with your account, but give it a couple of weeks. I guarantee you...his check will bounce!

Scam to the max.

They give you an out of state check which takes 5 business days before it bounces, meanwhile they try to sucker you in to giving them something back before you find out it bounced.

Run for the hills.
