I've never owned a suit and I don't know how to go about finding a good, well-fitting one without paying too much or too little. I want something I can wear to work, meetings and speeches. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the great help so far. How long does it take to tailor a custom-fitting suit, say if I were sized tomorrow and needed a suit by next week?

I suppose the major department stores may carry them as well. So make sure you check them out.

As for something more than one use, get a navy suit. That's the basic one. Alternative is a gray one. You can wear it to any of those 3 things that you said you wanted. Get a pair of black leather shoes, a nice leather belt, a few white or light colored shirts and a couple of ties. Don't forget dress socks. Those together will go a lot of places. You will need to decide whether you want single or double breasted suits. Some people look better in one or the other. Try them both out and see how you like them. Have the salesperson help you with fit and modifications. Chances are, the jacket will need to be let out or taken in at some spots to make it fit you better. The sleeves are probably going to be off as well. Have the guy help you. That's what they are there for.

I would suggest Men's Wearhouse, or even Burlington Coat Factory. If your in Suffolk County though Rico's in Center Moriches has great suits and are reasonably priced.
