What is a good reliable test for the presence of CO2 gas, other than with fire?

If so, could you also explain the chemical equation for this test...
this is just an example of what i am looking for... Cu + 02 ---> CuO

Bubbling the gas in question through a solution o Calcium Hydroxide is a good test for Carbon dioxide. The solution should yield a white precipitate of Calcium Carbonate in the presence of CO2.

The equation is:

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ------> CaCO3 + H2O

The best way to test CO2 is effervescence.
