Bubbling the gas in question through a solution o Calcium Hydroxide is a good test for Carbon dioxide. The solution should yield a white precipitate of Calcium Carbonate in the presence of CO2.

The equation is:

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ------> CaCO3 + H2O
