when they accept the responsibility of becoming a man or woman. One does not grow up until they are able to think outside of themselves and think what is best for society. That is why you can see 50yr old kids and 15yr old adults. It is all about accepting the responsibility

Technically, the change comes with the loss of uniquely defined
spiritual, esoteric "innocence". Law is a different and more concrete matter.

Legally, the age of consent varies in numerous
jurisdictions. A boy in Kentucky or Pennsylvania may be
a man in Alabama. A girl in Washington State may be a woman in Florida. That goes worldwide as well...

In my culture, a girl is considered a woman when she has her first menses. She is taught to put aside children's things like toys and taught women's work such as cooking, weaving and keeping the home. This was also the time when she was considered ready to be courted and married.

But now, this ceremony is just the equivalent of a coming out party. But I think a girl takes on responsibility sooner than boys. Just compare the two, some people are uncomfortable leaving their kids home with a teenage son, but have no problem with their teen daughter.
