Why did gay marriage become an issue about 3 years ago? I had never heard of it b4 then.?

I just don't understand the timing. All of a sudden there is all this talk about gay marriage. I don't think it was gays who made it an issue.

It bugs me when people are dishonest. Gay marriage was not in the news before 2004. Clinton had an issue with gays in the military, but that's another question. I'm talking specifically about gay marriage.

And those of you who say it was a distractor are right but there is more to it.
Why do I always have to answer my own questions? Is it because I'm the smartest person on YA with the possible exception of IItrix and beachbum? The other reason was to bring all the religious nuts out to the polls. Religious nuts usually vote for people like George Bush. So the gay marriage thing was highlighted to increase the vote turnout for Bush. Without the gay marriage issue, Kerry would probably be president.

Obviously, it became big because of the election. There was some ruling in a court in Massachusetts and the fundie Christianists turned it into an election issue. I find it ironic that these amendments purport to restore the dignity of marriage. The heterosexual community has done more to destroy the dignity of marriage through things beyond divorce such as sham weddings like Britney Spears and Dennis Rodman and turning marriage into game shows like the Bachelor, Wifeswap, and Temptation Island.

I don't understand how gay marriage can be an issue. The citizens of the US supposedly have freedom of religion. If it isn't against some1's religion to marry the same sex than the government should not be able to stop them (same with bigamy). Then you get the people who say if it's not against my religion to kill people than why should the govt. stop me....that's not what i mean killing people effects other peoples life's. marrying someone of the same sex of marrying 20 people doesn't. not that any of that applies to your question. I would have to say it became an issue because GWB has a lesbian daughter and the people opposed to him want to make him look bad....but that's just a guess.

Because people got this great idea to redefine marriage to fit the beliefs of homosexuals.

Pardon me, but marriage came come the abrahamic religions and is based on their beliefs.

Why do gays feel the need to hijack someone else's beliefs? That's not exactly tolerant is it?

I've got no problem with civil unions. It's the same as marriage benefits, but no one's beliefs are being hijacked and altered.

Why can't gays be satisfied with civil unions? Oh yeah, cause its the PRINCIPLE of the matter, isn't it? Isn't that what the religious people are saying too, that its the PRINCIPLE of the matter?

It's always been an issue. For years some gays have threatened to destroy the sanctity of marriage, and really it should have been dealt with long before now.
