I've discussed this with my kids before seeing this post. They're issue is the relevance the book has today. I tell them it's more an historical perspective than anything. The use of the 'n' word is a debating point. Should it be removed from the novel. In my mind no, it should be read as intended and given note to when it was written. In discussing with them whether it's a valid book in todays society, I tell t hem yes, in that it is written in a way that you don;t see anymore. I'd rather them read Twain than Rowling, although I have nothing against J.K..

Why would someone have a problem with kids reading Huck Finn? Especially high schoolers? Yes, I have read it and yes, I have children... and I can't see any cons other than the reading level for that particular book is UNDER high school level.

Huck Finn is a great book, however it does personify teens living on their own, abusive alcoholic parents, smoking, stealing, cussing and all those things that parents tell you not to do. It does however show spirit, initiative and a different time period in our history. It shows racial harmony and values such as friendship and loyalty.

Pros would be that it is a book known by thousands of people of high school age, and almost every person has read it by the time they become an adult. It has become a very important piece of literature, and it shows a lot of good morals in it.
