Do you have soft water? If not, removing the calcium is a temporary fix. Expect it to come back sooner and thicker. Here is what we did to clean ours:
Start the cleaning cycle with an empty dishwasher. When it is full, add CLR and let it run for a while. Stop it before it drains and let it sit so the CLR has more time to work If you have heavy deposits you may want to attack them with a rag or brush now. Restart the dishwasher and let it finish the cycle.
We did this for 10 years before buying a water softener. While the dishwasher got progressively worse (gunk up sooner) it started cleaning itself once we fed it soft water.

Run the dishwasher on empty with bicarb in the detergent compartment and vinegar in the rinse compartment. Take a look at the difference when the cycle is finished !!!

If you want a more natural product I'd recommend vinegar,if you use the CLR,make sure you rinse a couple of times! Best of luck!
