what am I doing wrong? Windows was able to search for wireless connections within range, which was nice...because I could bum off others connections when I didn't have one available.

What do I do, and how do I do it?

I'm gonna master Linux, but right now, I'm a complete retard

Plug it into a wired network and use this Guide to get your wireless going.

You can look into 3rd party utils like NetworkManager but the wireless capabilities of Linux are pretty primitive at the moment from a user perspective.
