if reverse is the onlt gear you got, then it must be the tranny.i was going to say the wheel bearing, until you said the reverse is the only gear you have.also when you put the axle in,did it go all the way back in?what i do is take my foot and kick it till it goes bang, and then i know its all the way back into the c-lock.

What does the cv joint have to do with the transmission only going into reverse? Can't say if the cv joint is all right or needs replaced but the transmission should be repaired if you want to go forward.

Before you put in the CV joint did the car go forwards and back? If so, then the only change was the CV joint, then I have to say it has something wrong with it. Take it out and try again, or take it to a repair shop and have it put in.

Your transmission is hammered. You could try to get it repaired or a new one. CV joint will make a clicking noise when its bad, but no effect on reverse.
Best of Luck!

What did it do before you put the axle in?
If the transmission was doing that before, is the fluid at the proper level? Has the fluid and filter ever been changed?
