For those of you who are taking offense at Mormon being a cult....I did not mention Mormon being a cult in my question, just "cult", that obviously means Mormon must be a cult.

A cult is a group that most people believe won't let you out if you want to leave. They try to brainwash you to stay a part of their group. The previous answerer here is living proof that you can leave the Mormon religion and talk bad about it all you want, as that seems to be her goal in life.
The Mormon church is a major worldwide religion. It's a church, not a cult. 12 million members, contributing members of society, Christians, humanitarians, who do good continually.

All religions are cults until they get enough members/believers to be mainstream.

Similar questions were asked about JFK being Catholic. It didn't end up being an issue. It will likely be tougher for Romney than for JFK

I was raised in an evangelical church and we were taught that Mormonism is a cult. However, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a very effective marketing/mission campaign and has seen significant growth. So while they are becoming more mainstream at least in numbers, many still view them as a cult.

Now the story of the founding of the Mormon Church, with Joseph Smith finding and translating the golden tablets, is pretty hard to believe. But this is a situation where the relatively young age is a detriment, because we have so much detail. All religions have weird foundations. Its just that much of the detail has been blurred by history, or the stories have been ingrained in our culture.

I think anything that asks you to leave your reason at the door is a cult. A cult is simply in the eye of the beholder. So I finish with my first 4 words.

All religions are cults.

No. Bush Jr being a member of the Skull and Bones cult would beat Romney to the punch. Btw, if you consider Mormons a cult then what do you call Christianity....

He is trying to down play the membership in the Mormon church. He has been pushing to get to the center. At least he is happy with one wife isn't he? I would worry if his character was more like Manson.

Hardly. Any organized religion could be described as a cult: "adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices", "a religious group that follows a particular theological system". Merriam-Webster: "1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP; 2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents".

Mitt Romney will have the highest morals of any president past or present. Therefore his word can be trusted, and he will not play with cigars or leave questionable stains on dresses.
