When you are in a joint lease (both names actually on the lease), the law says you are both equally responsible for the rent. But the landlord is entitled to collect the full amount of the rent from anyone on the lease. One person leaving does not relieve them of paying rent, but nine times out of ten they will not pay anymore once they leave. That leaves the remaining leasee to pay the full rent or risk being evicted. The only recourse is to sue the person who left for the money you had to pay in their absence.

Mickey is right, but just in case ask a legal begal in your area since your landlord is not nice and will probably take the one that stays behind to court and look for the other one that went off to Costa Rica with the pet dog.

Both parties are still liable.
