Vietnam's a beautiful country, especially at the country side. The streets are dirtier than in the more developed countries (e.g. America), the poverty will probably surprise you (there are a LOT of people asking for money in the street, etc), many places can be dirty, also people e.g. merchants trick a lot of people. MANY people who sell things to foreign tourists WILL sell their stuff at a very high price compared to selling to normal Vietnamese people. So beware.
On the bright side, the modern side of Vietnam can be GREAT. The Hotels, the restaurants, ... I was just listing the cons since most answers are only putting the bright side to this. But I'd still recommend Vietnam. I live there, practically. ^_^

i have been there twice. Vietnam is such a great place. It's where you can find very slim ladies and are mostly vegetarian. Guys are also sweet! When you go out with them, they will really serve you! The foods are great too! Yummy! i really like their noodles (pho-a) and spring rolls! it's also where i tasted the best grilled and steamed goat meat! Yup! so tasty! and it's very cheap there. You can be a millionaire if you change your hundred dollars there. If you want to see good beaches, they have a lot too. Just go to Nha Trang and you'll enjoy strolling the 7-km baywalk there. I also recommend going to some histroric places around Ho Chi Minh. I love the Kuchi Tunnel there! The tunnel they used as hiding place during war! I love Vietnam! And i still want to go back there!

Fantastic - it's safe, fascinating, so cheap you feel that you're not paying anything, the people are friendly, the food is great.
Hanoi is way different from Ho Chi Minh.
The best thing to do is to check out the offical tourism sites and a few others comments. I've also provided a link to a planning tool which allows you to sort accommodation by destination and price. $20-30 for hotel will get you a palace, You can even find hotels for $8 a night with breakfast if you dig deep, although if you really want to indulge, try the Sunrise Beach Resort Hotel in Nha Trang for $150.

It's a beautiful, interesting, dynamic, safe and law abiding country with very friendly, hospitable and hard-working people. It's also rapidly modernizing and industrializing but at the same time is doing everything possible to preserve its cultural heritage (while becoming more and more a part of the larger world community).
You'll enjoy visiting Vietnam as many of us have and more are coming everyday. The climate is wonderful, the accommodations very up-to-date, the food is the best this side of heaven and the prices are so reasonable you will not believe they are possible, considering the high quality and quantity of what you get with you money.

I have not, but some friends have visited and liked it a lot. They said the people were very nice and that its a beautiful country. A guy I know who fought in the Vietnam War said it was a nice country, too, and he liked the people, he was sure glad to get back from the war though.

I have been to Hanoi. It is nice. I find the Old Quarter very interesting especially where the market is, as it is so organized you can easily locate the area where you want to buy something. Streets are so named after the items being sold in the whole block. The tours are good. The fruits are quite cheap and sweet.
I only wished I were able to see Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) as well, if only to see the Cu Chi Tunnels.

When I was there the country side was beautiful. The lush green fields and the salt spray in the air and the smell of naplam was a wonderful way to start the day

It extravagance !
If you take bunch of U.S dollars over there...you be a millionnair !
1 dollar over here means 15 dollars over there!
And the sight is magnificent ! It's so natural...and if you go to Hainoi....it's practically like a fresh forest..no cut down trees or anything ! It's just soo amazing.
The people over there is super friendly too.
