one thing that they did was sing. they used to sing to each other to communicate between each other, but also to sing their woes. this is where Gospel music comes from. The well-known song "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is such a song from way back when.
Also, I read in a book "Moi, Tituba, Sorciere..." that there were some black slaves who were free and who practiced their religion (different types of animism or, as the story portrays, voodoo) and taught it.
I think they lost most of their original languages though.

They weren't controlled 24-7. They sang, told stories, and parcticed their religion when they could. Much in the same way Americans have kept traditions alive from previous generations. I've never been to Germany but do know some of my ethnic past.

They had songs that sounded like basically rubbish to the overseers, but in reality, kept alive important ideas in their culture.

many plantation did not allow, but some allowed slaves to have one day off in one month, and they could sing and do any religious things they wanted with whites supervision. but many whites did not understand this and was afraid of it, so religion part soon whent out and spread christian to blacks, but singing and danceing stayed

Singing. Its said that they always sang songs while working. Remebering their home and keeping old stories/legends going.

I think alot of it was the slave owners trying to convert their slaves to christianity. but it was still segragated at the time so they were able to go to church, praise in their own words, and come together and socialize freely.
