Sorry for your loss. I had the same experience but the vet told me depending how they're bred they could have unseen illnesses like congenital heart problems.

I'd use the hamster disinfectant first on the cage; bars; toys; food dish. Then wash off thoroughly with hot water and air dry. Get the new hammie his own bottle and you should be fine.

I'm sorry about your little guy--I lost a hamster, too. He lived with me for 5 days and then died on my birthday. It was rough. I got my hamster from Petsmart, though. But, they are practically the same. Most of those guys are already sick long before someone buys them. Then, they live just long enough for the guarantee to expire. They say that they'll give you the money back, but they just don't see that I didn't just buy an animal, I bought an animal that I fell in love with. I hate that the pet store animals live so short a life. Well, yeah, you can reuse the cage, but only if you clean it really well. If the other hamster had wet tail or something, then it can be passed onto the next one, so be careful with that. Good luck with that. If you can, though, don't buy another hamster from the petstore, the same thing will probably happen again. Adopt one or something. I had a very sick guinea pig that I also bought from petsmart and he had many many diseases and suffered for about two years. If you buy another critter from petco, you're in for the same heartbreak. =(

Wow, sorry for your lost. I just bought a hamster 2 weeks ago from PetCo and in a week my poor buddy died also. I cleaned my cage with dawn soap and made sure I washed it very well. The cage can be used over and over again, but if it bothers you take the cage back and also let them know the hamster died and get your money back. Go to a different PetCo, you could have got one that was sick like me which means that pet co does not take good care of their little guys. But do get another one......I love my new Rascal

I've never had hamsters from Petco, but I bought a rat from them and it literally died on the way to the vet not 36 hours later. When I took it back to the store and explained what happened the lady was just like "oh, sorry" in a really snotty tone then asked me if I wanted her to "dispose of it" for me. I'll never be buying animals from there again. I got my other one from Petsmart then one from a breeder and they're doing great.

I got a male short hair teddy bear hammy from Petco... and he's been living for over a month. he's very healthy, so theres nothing wrong with petco. Your ham probably was just sick and died. Pets have undetected health problems, too, just like humans.

I hear Pet Co treats ALL of their animals badly!
You should call and get a refund if you can.
