Because our culture has placed a stigma on it. Marriage has been described as "The ball and chain" or "The end of life as we know it." Marriage is the most wonderful thing in the world...especially if it's with the right person. Unfortunately our society has made being married and everything about it, very negative. Another reason is that people aren't willing to fight for it. At the first sign of adversity, they're ready to give up and throw in the towel. And the last reason, is that divorce is way too easy.

Divorce is no longer "taboo" and societal views on marriage as a religious, sanctimonious and therefore serious relational contract have changed. Bearing in mind that we are a capitalist society of bred-to-consume individuals, much of our personal views no longer come from the home/parents, but instead from our TV. You now have TV shows that reinforce the "good" character of divorced households, or households where no marriage exists, yet a relationship occurs. Just 60 years ago, TV censors would NEVER have allowed that to take place. Likewise, you have TV shows like the "Bachelor" and the "Bachelorette" that have turned the institution into a money-grubbing game show. As a society who consumes and accepts these images, we reflect this in our attitudes and personal relationships at home. Gone are the days of Betty Crocker homemaker who sticks by her man and always has a four course meal on the table when he comes home. In place is Reba McEntire and her straight-outta-the-trailer park homelife (which many of us readily identify with, including myself). Marriage = divorce says our television, our celebrity-addicted news media, even many of our own families. From a brief historical view point, it was virtually unavoidable as an outcome.

Marriage is not what is "declining."
It is the number of people who are emotionally mature enough to BE in any kind of relationship. Too many people - regardless of age - are just too damn self-centered and lacking the teamwork mindset that is necessary to live together with ANY other human being.
There's nothing wrong with marriage.
What's lacking is a real sense of committment, compromise, sympathy and forgiveness.
It's really not rocket science, folks.

Selfishness, people are too quick to jump in. They find they don't like what they see, or they will always look for what's better. If both parties in a marriage would do their best to please the other, then both would have the benefit of the relationship. My wife and I have been together long enough to have many ups and downs. We still choose to love each other. Love is a choice, not just a feeling.

Because people find that it is easier to just walk out of a relationship then a marriage. With a marriage you have to split the assets!

The big thing now, in the United States anyway, is to live together unmarried. I also believe this is because of chat rooms, video chat, porno videos online, real time sex online and all the other internet sites out there such as AOL that promote community connections. This to me is upsetting and will only get worse.

Maybe family values are on the decline as well. Many factors involved, different lifestyles, different attitudes, the government nol
longer differenciates between married and non married couples.

The number of marriages is declining because people in general are waiting longer to get married or do not see that marriage is necessary.
Personally, unless you want to have kids, I don't see any reason to get married.

You see girl it's called education, the intelligence of both men and women have become so similarly equal in fact women are passing right on by and they don't put up with the garbage they used to think they had too. So men are just the same old stinky pigs they always were. One divorce at a time.....
