My eight month old sleeps 12 hours a night and takes two- three naps during the day about an hour long. He has been doing this for almost a month. Is he ok?

Yes he's okay...count your blessings! Babies should get between 12 and 15 hours of sleep in a 24 hr. period, so your son is just more on the longer end. Mine is polar opposite!

While the average amount of sleep per day at this age is 13 to 14 hours, the range of normal is still quite wide at this stage in your child's life.

The average length of a nap now is about 1 hour. Some babies will nap 20 minutes, others a few hours. Naps help prevent your baby from becoming too cranky to sleep well at night, so it is important that they be long enough. He's fine, probably very active in his 'awake' hours.

He's fine. My son used to sleep about that much when he was that age...he slept around 12 hours at night, took 2, 2-hour naps during the day.

It's perfectly normal. My son has been getting 11-12 hours at night and 1-3 during the day in 2-3 naps since he was a month or two old. Almost every book I have read says that is the right amount. (NOTE! I do not mean he sleep without waking to feed.)

4-12 Months Old: 14 - 15 hours per day

While up to 15 hours is ideal, most infants up to 11 months old get only about 12 hours sleep. Establishing healthy sleep habits is a primary goal during this period, as your baby is now much more social, and his sleep patterns are more adult-like.

Babies typically have three naps and drop to two at around 6 months old, at which time (or earlier) they are physically capable of sleeping through the night. Establishing regular naps generally happens at the latter part of this time frame, as his biological rhythms mature. The midmorning nap usually starts at 9 a.m. and lasts about an hour. The early afternoon nap starts from 12 to 2 p.m. and lasts an hour or two. And the late afternoon nap may start from 3 to 5 p.m. and is variable in duration.

6 to 12 Months
At 6 months, an infant may nap about 3 hours during the day and sleep about 11 hours at night. At this age, you can begin to change your response to an infant who awakens and cries during the night.

You can give babies at this age 5 minutes to settle down on their own and go back to sleep. If they don't, you can comfort them without picking them up (talk softly, rub their backs), then leave — unless they appear to be sick. Sick babies need to be picked up and comforted. If your baby doesn't seem sick and continues to cry, you can wait a little longer than 5 minutes, then repeat the short crib-side visit.

After several days, your baby should find it easier to get back to sleep on his or her own. But if your 6-month-old continues to wake up five or six times each night, talk to your doctor.

Between 6 and 12 months, separation anxiety becomes a major issue for some babies and may cause them to start waking up again. But the rules for nighttime awakenings are the same through a baby's first birthday: Don't pick up your baby, turn on the lights, sing, talk, play, or feed your child. All of these activities encourage repeat behavior.

If your baby wakes up crying at night, you can check in to make sure he or she isn't sick or in need of a diaper change. You can pat your child lovingly on the back or belly. Using a pacifier or thumb sucking can also help children of this age learn to calm and reassure themselves. If your baby continues to cry, you can institute the 5-minute visit pattern.

My six month old daughter is the same way. I've read that babies need 14-16 hours of sleep a day (more or less, depending on the baby) so I'm sure you're baby is just fine.

My 1 yo has been sleeping throughout the night for 12 hours since he was about 4 months old. He still does and has 1.5 hours in the morning and around 1.5 - 2.3 hours in the afternoon. He is just starting to need less time in the afternoon so i need to start keeping him up longer in h9s morning sleep.

You bubby is fine he will start having a sleep transition around 1-15 months where he will require less sleep and eventually on have one sleep a day.

Count your blessings honey.

The other thing instead of him being asleep for only 1 hour try keep him up for longer. this is my babies routine

Up at 7am with a bottle
8am Breakfast
bed at 9-9.30 wake him up at 11am
11am drink of water (he doesn't need a bottle at this time anymore
12pm Lunch
1.30 bed he is then allowed to sleep until 4.15
Usually he wakes about 3.30 then drink
then dinner at 5pm
bath
bed with a bottle at 6.50
In bed at 7pm

He's fine. He's probably going through a growth spurt. EVERYONE grows when they sleep, so your son must be getting ready for a growth spurt!
